King Charles Officially Strips Prince Andrew of Royal Highness Title and Princely Dignity

Through a definitive move, the reigning monarch has officially stripped Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his Royal Highness attribute and his princely title.

The changes were formalized by issuing letters patent under the official state seal, that have been recorded in the Gazette.

The entry stated: “His Majesty has been graciously inclined by letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall cease to be entitled to hold and enjoy the designation of ‘Royal Highness’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince’.”

A separate entry affirmed the removal of the Duke of York from the peerage list, with immediate effect.

The notice stated: “The king has been pleased to direct by warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his secretary of state to cause the Duke of York to be removed from the peerage roll.”

Background of the Decision

This decision follows increasing controversy over the former prince's connections to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the release of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.

The author claimed that she was assaulted by Andrew after being trafficked by Epstein, claims that Mountbatten Windsor has always strenuously denied.

Procedure of Title Removal

Charles employed his royal prerogative—accepted rights held by the sovereign—following discussions with Cabinet Office officials, rather than through parliamentary means.

Letters patent and royal warrants are tools of this authority, used to bestow or revoke honors and styles.

Because the Royal Highness designation is conferred by such documents, it can be revoked through the same process.

Additional Actions and Support

After the palace statement, the lord chancellor was directed to prepare the required paperwork for the title removals.

The decision also includes Andrew relinquishing his tenancy on his Windsor residence, a 30-room Crown Estate property where he has lived for twenty years.

Officials endorsed the monarch's decision.

Retained Honor

Despite the stripping of honors, it was announced that Mountbatten Windsor will retain his South Atlantic medal, awarded for his service as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
